Iconic History of the Grace Building

Built in 1974, The Grace Building site was formerly the Sterns Department Store. Since 1913, the Sterns Department Store in this location was a draw to residents and tourists enjoying the theatre. The building was torn down to build the much larger W.R. Grace building. Interestingly enough, the developers took advantage of zoning requirements to get a Sixth Avenue address by including a plaza behind it. Today, the plaza is being substantially redeveloped.

Tenants in the building include financial service firms and media companies. Today Midtown is the hottest office market.
